Tanzania Telecommunication Corporation (TTC), formerly known as Tanzania Telecommunications Company Limited (TTCL), was established under the "Tanzania Telecommunications Company Incorporation Act of 1993." The organization began its operations on January 1, 1994, following the division of the former Tanzania Posts and Telecommunications Company (TP&TC) into four separate entities: Tanzania Posts Corporation (TPC), Tanzania Telecommunications Company Limited (TTCL), Tanzania Postal Bank (TPB), and the Tanzania Communication Commission (TCC), now known as the Tanzania Communication Regulatory Authority (TCRA). This split was part of the government's efforts to liberalize the communications sector in Tanzania.

On February 23, 2001, TTCL underwent partial privatization when a consortium consisting of MSI of the Netherlands and Detecon of Germany acquired a 35% stake. However, on June 23, 2016, the Government of Tanzania fully regained ownership of TTCL. On February 1, 2018, following the signing of the Tanzania Telecommunication Corporation Act No. 12 of 2017, the organization was officially renamed the Tanzania Telecommunication Corporation and became fully government-owned.
